Color Blending, FX Brushing and Photos for Texture

Hi Everyone,

For this week's blog I thought I would do a demo covering how to create light and shadow with color instead of just value and various texture techniques using Adobe Photoshop CS 5 and lower. In this demo you will see how to use the color blend mode for layers, how to use the FX options with your brush strokes and color blend mode, and how to use photos for texture using the color blend mode. These were techniques that I learned and adapted from my illustration professors Cliff Cramp and Christian Hill at Cal State Fullerton. I have broken up the tutorial into three sections because of duration limitations on You Tube. I would suggest viewing these demos at a high resolution so that you can properly see the settings. These demos only go over the very basics but they do give insight of how to approach digital painting.

Animal Field Sketches

 During my second to last semester at Cal State Fullerton I had the honor to take Tina Schmidt's Wild Life Drawing class. We learned a great deal about animal anatomy and how their bodies moved. We also went on a lot of field trips in which we had to do a heavy load of sketches in our field books. We also learned different sketching mediums, like using pen brushes and felt tip, which taught us to go with the flow and to not worry about mistakes. It was a rewarding experience, because I learned a lot and what I learned will carry on through out my career.

Of the trips we took, the trip to the L.A. ZOO was by far my favorite because of the shear variety of animals they have there. If you want a true challenge to sketch, then the sea otters at the entrance is where it is at. If you want a creature who is a ham and loves to pose for you, then check out the meerkats as they make good models, although they tend to do a lot of Napoleon poses. My favorite was studying the komodo dragons, they move but move slow and are fascinating to watch.

Back to Blogging

After a long hiatus from blogging . . . I am back. I have just recently graduated from Cal State Fullerton with a BFA in Illustration and with honors to boot. The man next to me in the photo is my illustration instructor Cliff Cramp who gave me the instruction and motivation I needed to become a stronger artist. I am now pursuing my career as an illustrator and as a visual development artist. In order to help me gain more notice on the web I have returned to this old blog and I will be updating as I go. Growing the bean stalk and finished building

A little more progress on my project. The Bean stalk took me a little longer than I thought. Oddly I can paint faster than doing a collage.

Building the castle up

I am finally getting around to getting this project done. I don't think I was feeling well earlier yesterday because I was knocked out most of the day. Anyways, after getting some practice in on my Yoda piece it gave me a better idea how to handle some obstacles that I will be facing in this one because the layering and 3D separating is going to be very intricate so I am hoping everything goes the way I planned.

Done Friday night

Was going through my sketch book and came across a sketch that I had done last semester and had not painted even though I had planned on to. The sketch kept staring at me and I just had to work on doing a painting of it.

Mickey's Escape

My Mickey Comic Strip is finally done now all I have to do is print it out. I might touch it up later before I do that though just so I smooth everything out but I think I am good now.
